Reltio Community Spotlight: David Starnes, Director of Enterprise Information Management & Architecture at RedHill Biopharma

By Chris Detzel posted 06-27-2021 09:54

Data is one of the most important commodities in today's economy. The ability to successfully manage data is a competitive advantage in today's information-centric world, and the Reltio community offers enterprise IT professionals the ability to take initiative towards optimizing the effectiveness and accuracy of their data.

David Starnes is one of the Reltio community members that makes this possible. As the Director of Enterprise Information Management & Architecture at RedHill Biopharma, David brings valuable experience in a highly regulated industry into focus.

Programming began as a hobby for David. It eventually became a career as he found exciting opportunities to leverage his experience towards achieving new goals. He has developed backend processes, administered relational and non-relational databases, and designed information architectures in multiple roles throughout his career.

David's first Master Data Management (MDM) implementation was a master repository of healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations. Like many IT leaders, he carefully weighed the advantages and disadvantages of creating an in-house solution compared to implementing third-party MDM software. In his own words, choosing to "re-invent the wheel" would have been a "foolish endeavor", considering the complexity and scope of the project.

Since then, David has implemented MDM solutions three times for three different companies. He values continuous improvement, learning through collaboration with peers and gaining new perspectives on solving problems through each new project he takes on.

Outside of work, some of these projects include algorithmic investing, hardware electronics, and even outdoors activities like hiking and kayaking. David is an avid reader and occasional gamer, as well.

David Starnes on the MDM Industry

David believes that many companies in the MDM industry are challenged by outdated technology. He has seen companies struggle to onboard new domains to master with agility over the last few years, and hopes that the MDM landscape puts greater emphasis on system integration within the enterprise ecosystem.

If he could give himself one piece of advice upon starting out in the MDM industry, he would put greater emphasis on collaborating with peers both inside and outside the industry. Experience has shown David that a thirst for technology, a passion to explore new solutions, and a humble approach to learning is best complemented by the perspective that collaboration offers.

Looking forward, David is enthusiastic about the opportunity to build a top-notch data and analytics environment within an enterprise that leverages scalable solutions and solid information management practices. He's appreciative of the fact that his current position at RedHill gives him the opportunity to apply his experience building a best-in-breed data and analytics organization from the ground up.

Being part of the Reltio Community offers David a chance to learn about how people in other industries solve common problems, and provides him an opportunity to share his own experience applying technologies like Reltio to enterprise challenges in the MDM space.
