DnB batch job identifies the matches of customer records against DnB database/data tenant. I wanted to understand how the customer record and DnB records are merged internally. Is it that connector creates the DnB record first and then executes sameAs API? or there is a better way to achieve this.

I have no internal information regarding what's happening underneath, but I have a theory based on some observations. I believe the connector is not creating the DnB records first and then executing the sameAs API, as you suggested. My believe comes from the fact that on a large batch job we have never seen standalone DnB records. I think what happens instead is a dataProvider/contributorProvider pair of crosswalks are being used instead. In the end it ensures the DnB crosswalk will be tied to the proper Reltio entity.
